Introduction \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ I'd like to assume that by getting this Guide/FAQ you know what Liero is. But I have found that there are some people who need a little more help than others. Hence the creation of this guide. Liero can best be described as a low-rez, real time version of Worms. Or it could be described by one of its many forefathers or clones, such as Molz. You controlone worm, your opponent controls another worm. You use one of the 40 weapons (you cancarry five at a time) to try and remove your opponent's worm from this plain of existence. Thereare numerous settings that I will go into more detail with them later. Now that you know whatLiero is, you can begin to learn how to play and how to play well. Soon you'll be roping acrossthe top of the screen, dropping Chiquita bombs and larpas on your opponent's head. A bit of a History lesson should probably go here. Liero was created in 1998 (orreleased then, I should say) and has built up something close to cult status among the onlinecommunity. Since then it has been growing in strength and popluarity at a steady pace. Now, four years later (2002), people are still playing it and changing it. By the creation of programs like LieroKit and the like, people have been able to change the graphics and weapons of Liero and add a whole new twist. If you're interested in messing with Liero, I strongly suggest LieroKit. It's availiable on any of the major Liero sites and even some of the not so major, like mine. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ III. Game Setup \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ >>A. Play Styles<< There are several different ways to play Liero. Each of which gives it's own unique experience. By far the most common is "Kill em' All," just because it's a general slugfest. The other modes include Capture the Flag, Simple CtF, and Game of Tag. --i. Kill em' All-- A free for all slugfest. Kill the other guy, don't get killed, meet the number of required kills. Not a difficult concept. --ii. Capture the Flag-- Your job is to get your opponent's flag (signified by their color) and bring it back to your base (house). In order to pick up a flag, you have to have made the most recent kill. So if you wipe out your opponent, then you can pick up his flag. But if he kills you before you can bring it back to your base, then you have to kill him once again in order to pick up his flag. --iii. Simple CtF--- A simplified version of Capture the Flag. The same rules as Capture the Flag, but you don't have to have made the most recent kill in order to pick up the flag. --iv. Game of Tag-- The first person to make a kill becomes the hunted, while the recently deceased becomes the hunter. The clock times up toward the selected time until the hunter kills the hunted. After that, the rolls are switched and the other player’s timer begins to go up. You play until someone hits the selected time. >>B. Basic Controls<< You need to have your jump, fire, change, and movement buttons assigned. Now... some basic movement stuff that some people don't know. To dig squirm in one direction until you hit some dirt. Now tap the button for the opposite direction. You'll dig a small hole through the dirt. To fire your ninja rope, hold down the change weapon button and push jump. >>C. Advanced Controls<< >>Super Jumping<< Super jumping is a special little getaway tactic. Someone has to design a map specifically to for super jumping in order for this to work. There has to be a section of wall that sits at about a 70° angle. If you have this wall go over to it. Now, while walking toward the wall, start jumping. Keep pressing the jump button and you'll start climbing up the wall. >>Ninja Roping<< I can't say much about this. Just get good at using the rope. It is key in keeping you alive. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ IV. Weapons \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ One of the biggest parts of Liero is the multitude of weapons Listed here is a short description of all of them. The loading times are in seconds and based on 100% loading time. >>Bazooka<< Shots: 3 | Loading Time: 6 This weapon doesn’t do nearly as much damage as you think it would. It's the quick loader of the missle weapons. You get a few shots, and it isn't effected by gravity. >>Big Nuke<< Shots: 3 | Loading Time: 4 This weapon can be the most destructive force in the game. But it is surely on the power end of the weapon spectrum. It has an extremely slow reload time, and on top of that, the clusters detonate in 2 stages. This gives your opponent lots of time to escape. >>Blaster<< Shots: 3 | Loading Time: 4 The Blaster relies on shrapnel to do its damage. In fact, it will go right through your opponent until it hits the ground or something else that is solid. If your enemy is on the ground, try landing the shot right under him/her. These shots can kill the other worm in one hit. >>Booby Trap<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 4 Here's one to hack your friends off with. It's not likely to fool a pro (especially if you have bonuses turned off!), but you never know. All the booby trap does is throw out an item that is in fact an explosive. If you catch one of your friends with this one... be sure to mock them for an extended period of time. >>Bouncy Larpa<< Shots: 4 | Loading Time: 6 This weapon it the bouncy brother of the larpa. It can almost be more dangerous to you than your opponent. This is bouncy things have a nasty tendency to bounce right back to their source. Like the regular larpa, this weapon is a missle that drops shrapnel in its wake. Use this to your advantage by shooting above your target. The enemy won't be able to get out of the way. >>Bouncy Mine<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 4 Another (you guessed it) bouncy weapon. This one is a little more reliable though. It acts like a super ball... a very destructive super ball. It will bounce back and forth until it hits something. It's really funny watching someone running away from a bouncy mine, because the escape rate is about one in ten. Boing, boing, boom. >>Cannon<< Shots: 6 | Loading Time: 6 This is a very intimidating weapon to be staring down the barrel of. All 6 shots can be unloaded quickly with devastating effects. The shots fall quickly, and let off a little shrapnel when they explode. >>Chaingun<< Shots: 50 | Loading Time: 5 The chaingun, in real life, is a multi barrel gun. The barrels rotate around, and when they reach 12 o'clock, they fire. I say this to differentiate between the chaingun and minigun. The chaingun has a high rate of fire, and unloads quite a few rounds. This is a good weapon for getting your pal as he swings overhead, or tacking him to a wall. >>Chiquita Bomb<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 8 What do you mean a rip off of Worms!?! There's a difference between a Chiquita bomb and a banana bomb! One shoots bananas and the other... oh never mind. The Chiquita bomb is a highly destructive cluster bomb. When your opponent sees the crescent shaped yellow object, they're probably going to turn tail and run. As with all the other cluster bomb items, the shrapnel (or more bananas in this case) is the part that does the damage. This weapon is the power side of the grenade weapons. >>Cluster Bomb<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 6 The cluster bomb is the middle ground in the shrapnel/grenade weapon spectrum. The cluster bomb doesn't go very far. But when it explodes, dozens of little pieces of shrapnel fly in all directions. This is a good pot-shot weapon. >>Crackler<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 7 The crackler is a bouncy weapon that shoots off bits of shrapnel as it goes. Because of its bouncy nature, it can be very dangerous to both the opponent and the attacker. If you want to use this one try to use it from above. That way it doesn't come back at you. >>Dart<< Shots: 5 | Loading Time: 3 Do not underestimate the power of this weapon. It flies with very little gravity effect, and it's pretty easy to doge. But if you can connect with this one, it will go strait through your enemy, inflicting a large amount of damage. You might want to call this the lightest missle weapon. >>Dirt Ball<< Shots: 5 | Loading Time: 3 The dirt ball is a very different weapon. You can't damage anyone with it, but you can hack them off. The dirt ball makes a large, circle of dirt on the map. You can bury yourself, cover your path, or bury your enemy. When used correctly this can be an excellent utility item. >>Doomsday<< Shots: 8 (2 in one shot - a total of 16 missiles) | Loading Time: 7 The doomsday could be better described as "twin missiles." When fired, two mini rockets fly off toward their target. The missiles separate at an angle, so they can be used to hit people at a long distance. Or, you can shoot at short range and connect with both rockets for extra damage. The Doomsday makes a great addition to any weapon setup. >>Explosives<< Shots: 1 (3 explosives in one shot) | Loading Time: 2 You have to be really careful with these ones. Explosives detonate very shortly after being shot. So you can hit yourself very easily if you hit a wall. The major advantage to the explosives is that they are very hard to dodge because of their quick fuse. These are perfect for an enemy that is falling down to you. >>Fan<< Shots: 3 seconds | Loading Time: 3 If you are playing with a 0% loading time, a fan is a definite must. Your enemy will get really mad when you blow 50 Chiquita bombs back at them. The fan is really difficult to use if you aren’t playing with a low reload. This is arguably the best defensive item for Liero. >>Flamer<< Shots: 4 seconds | Loading Time: 4 This is simply a flamethrower. It has a short range, but it packs a lot of punch. You can easily kill an opponent with one of these at point blank. The only problem is the enemy shooting back at you, and knocking you out of range. >>Float Mine<< Shots: 2 | Loading Time: 4 The perfect item to use against a hotshot ninja roper. Just set a few of these in a popular rope lane, and watch the fun. Float mines just stay right where you shoot them, until they are detonated or blown away by something. >>Gauss Gun<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 5 This weapon is a personal favorite of mine. The projectile moves at an incredible rate of speed, and isn't (as far as I know) effected by gravity. You won't be able to control your laughter if you manage to hit someone from across the level. Because they can see it coming, but can't get out of the way (try point blank too!). On the down side, you only get one shot, and it has a really slow reload time. Still, it's one of my favorites. >>Grasshopper<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 4 This is a rather unique weapon. When shot, it detonates several times. Each shot sends the bullet flying a little further. It acts like a little explosive grasshopper, what else can I say? >>Greenball<< Shots: 40 | Loading Time: 3 One of a few weapons that you can't directly damage other worms with. The greenball is a rapid-fire land maker, it can be good for making temporary cover, or something else like that. Or making a hasty getaway, but aside from that, it's rather useless. >>Grenade<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 4 The weakest weapon that is of grenade style. Other weapons in this family (Cluster Bomb, Chiquita Bomb) do more damage, but have a slower reload time. The grenade lets off ots of weak pieces of shrapnel to damage opponents. The main attraction to this weapon is the fast reload time. >>Handgun<< Shots: 15 | Loading Time: 3 The handgun is pretty weak, but a lot of people like it for several different reasons. The big one is the laser site. You can aim yourself with the handgun, and then switch to a more powerful weapon, like a Gauss Gun or Bazooka. The handgun has a very fast reload. >>Hellraider<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 3 You either love this one or you hate it. On the plus side, you can kill a worm with one well placed shot. And even if you miss, you're going to do damage. The downsides to this weapon are the slow reload, the short range, and the just plain unpredictability. When you shoot a hellraider, it has 3 stages. The first, is a flaming, thingy that doesn't have much range . Then, the flamey thing explodes, and shoots cannonballs all over the place. And finally, the cannon balls explode, sending shrapnel all over. You aren’t likely to nail a pro with one of these very often. >>Larpa<< Shots: 5 | Loading Time: 6 A lot of people love this weapon (including myself). The larpa is a missle that rains down bits of shrapnel (or bullets, or whatever). So you can nail opponents that are over a ridge or something like that. If you can get someone pinned down with these, it's pretty much over. >>Laser<< Shots: 1 second | Loading Time: 5 Bet you can't guess what this is!?! This is a consistency laser that lasts for 1 second. It fires straight and true, so it's a nice weapon to use if you're new to Liero. But some pros like this weapon too. Be sure to give this one a shot if you’re getting plastered by superior opponents. >>Mine<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 3 A little bit of explosive fun. The mine is a lot more effective than the booby trap, due to the fact that it blends in well. It is the same color as the dirt, so it blends in pretty well. Make sure you remember where you put the mines though! They can't tell which one you are! >>Minigun<< Shots: 50 | Loading Time: 7 The fastest firing bullet weapon in the game. You unload all the ammo in this gun in just a matter of seconds. Perfect for medium range, this is what some would call and intermediate weapon. Because beginners find it's long reload time distressing, while pros will opt for more destructive forces. >>Mini Nuke<< Shots: 2 | Loading Time: 3 A nice little weapon, with a nice big destructive force. The mini nuke is the big nuke's little brother, yet some prefer it. This is because it has more shots, and a faster reload time. The mini nuke is a thrown weapon that explodes, shoots little green things all over, and then the green things explode, releasing shrapnel all over. Good for getting people out of holes. >>Mini Rockets<< Shots: 10 | Loading Time: 5 This is a rapid-fire rocket launcher. The small missiles move at a high rate of speed, and can be impossible to dodge if they are released in a crescent shaped pattern. Good for picking off people hanging from the ceiling. >>Missle<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 7 The missle can be loads of fun. When fired you control the missle, instead of your worm. This leave you open for attack, so someone can come by and throw a handful of spikeballs in your face. Just make sure not to hit yourself with this very entertaining weapon. >>Napalm<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 7 There is no other weapon quite like the napalm. You throw it, it explodes, and flames shoot all over the place. A dead on shot will result in an instant kill. >>RB Rampage<< Shots: 10 | Loading Time: 4 The bullets from this weapon bounce off the ground and walls for a long time, or until they hit something. Which will probably be you. The reload time is decent, but the low range of this weapon make it very dangerous for the user. >>Rifle<< Shots: 1 | Loading Time: 4 One Bullet. One Laser Sight. One heck of a lot of fun. This weapon is devastating on 0% reload mode, and even if not, the rifle can do some damage. The bullet is impossible to dodge, it just moves to fast. It has a medium reload time. >>Shotgun<< Shots: 5 | Loading Time: 4 This weapon comes with a lot of shots, a lot of damage, and a medium reload time. The major downfall of this weapon is it's slow reload BETWEEN shots. You can't unload all the ammo very quickly, and this can prove to be a major problem. >>Spike Balls<< Shots: 1 (1 shot with 5 spike balls) | Loading Time: Here's a crowd pleaser. They are not very effective at a distance. But if you can hit someone with all the balls at point blank, there won't be much left. >>Super Shotgun<< Shots: 2 | Loading Time: 6 This can sort of be classified as a mid range weapon. It has a middle reload time and it does a middle amount of damage at a middle range. At point blank however, the blast can cause some real pain, and send your opponent flying. The shot spreads out a whole lot, so itcan be good at a long range... providing your enemy is low on life. >>Uzi<< Shots: 15 | Loading Time: 2 This weapon isn't particularly powerful, and its ammo is pretty low. But it DOES reload extremely quickly. If you’re using a bunch of power weapons (Gauss Gun, Big Nuke, etc.) you may want to include an Uzi so you don't run out of ammo. Because there's nothing worse than running out of ammo while your friend still has a full load of spike balls. >>Winchester<< Shots: 9 | Loading Time: 6 A high-powered rifle that most snipers prefer. It's hard to dodge and moves quite fast. One downside is that it doesn't do much damage and takes time to load between shots. >>Zimm<< Shots: 2 | Loading Time: 8 This is a scary one. A high-powered energy ball bounces off of everything. It does quite a bit of damage, but it has a really good chance of coming back to hit you. If you plan on using this weapon, make sure you're going to hit the person before it bounces. Or, your opponent is camping in some alcove, fire it in there and watch. Another thing, after you fire it, move. This weapon, as I said, has a nasty tendency to come right back to it's place of origin. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ V. Tactics \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ >>A. Play Styles<< Sometimes your play style is more important than your weapon selection. Here I've listed a few of the many playing styles that I know about or have seen. If you're finding yourself getting beaten quite often, try changing your style. >>Sniper<< The sniper runs until he can get a clear shot at the person, preferably from a long distance away. He tend to favor high power distance weapons, such as the Gauss Gun and Rifle. >>Roper<< The roper is a very confused individual... he thinks he's stuck in a Tarzan flick. He swings and drops death upon the people below him. His favorite weapons are the Chiquita Bomb, and Spikeballs. >>Rainer<< The rainer likes to use shrapnel weapons to bring damage to his foe. His favorite weapon of all time is the Larpa. The crackler and grenade also rank high on his list. >>Spike<< Spike is a dangerous foe. He only arms himself with one weapon... spikeballs. At close range, he's the most terrible opponent imaginable, but he doesn't have the long range capabilities of the others. >>Camper<< Campers likes to stay in one place and wait for his enemies to come to them. Usually they're armed with some high-powered weapons that aren’t too big on explosions (such as the Gauss Gun) and as soon as an enemy gets close enough, let everything rip. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ VI.
